Friend is the DJ project of Dominic Irla from Cape Town, South Africa, where he spent his early years as a dedicated promoter and music journalist in the thriving festival circuit (founder of Psymedia in 2010). In 2018 he travelled to SE Asia and established himself as a formidable DJ and promoter in Vietnam for 3 years. From sandy beaches down south and mystical caves up north, Friend played at many reputable clubs, festivals and tropical jungle raves across the country. During this time he co-founded Magic Box Engine; an underground record label based in Vietnam pushing out eclectic releases, guest mixes, and conceptual events. In 2021 Friend marked the end of his chapter in Vietnam and returned to Cape Town, where he now plays as an independent DJ and designs the occasional rave poster. With selections traversing various shades of house, minimal, techno, electro, break beats, trance and more, Friend is a true digger and a bit of a wild card. Never shy to switch up the genre or tempo. Sometimes obscure. Always tasteful. Heavily inspired by his nomadic travels in South East Asia, Latin America and Europe; Friend taps into a sonic world of timeless music without borders. His sets often riddled with groovy basslines, acid frequencies, hypnotic atmospheres, and sharp broken beats.
